Summer's End

It promises to be a crazy winter here in Butte. The two most reliable sources of weather information (the Farmer's Almanac and Robert) both agree that this winter will be all over the place, i.e., hot and foggy and cold and dry and rainy and snowy and windy and calm and all manner of other adjectives.

There will be a few things we can count on. 1) The days will be short. 2) We will have weather. 3) Most of the weather will be in or from the sky. 4) I will not regrow my hair.

South West Montana Summer '06 was a good time. I had some friends and family out. I went floatin' a few times. We made a bunch of progress on Silver Bow Properties, LLC and somewhat less progress on Silver Bow Software, LLC. All in All, a great time was had.

Now it's late fall and we're even coming up on the end of hunting season. I'm pleased to report that I'll have a freezer or mule deer steaks, ground venison, mule deer salami, and jalapeno cheese venison kielbasa. Oh, and the head will make a great dog toy. Disturbing pictures to follow.

It's been brought to my attention that not all of you know what I look like anymore. I've shaved my head and face; but I promise I'm not running from the law.

I'd like to thank Billy-Bob for posting this picture of us floatin' the Jefferson to his myspace profile.

A Hookah for Our Trouble

Sometimes I have a hard time naming the posts. Today is one of those occasions. So many topics are rolled up in today's edition.

I could have simply called it "Tenant Gone Missing II". This post is largely about our missing tenant who just up and left all our stuff. See: ?Tenant Gone Missing. We cleaned out his unit today.

Either "High Class Livin'" or "One More Place Forbidden to the Dogs" would have served nicely. Out of this deal we did get a lovely floral print couch. Now we are prepared to receive guests. I am a bit concerned that the location of the couch is far too close to the window. I don't want our prize to have faded upholstery.

We netted a whole collection of creepy dolls. "Attack of the Creepy Dolls". But they aren't attacking. and plus I'd rather not talk about them any more than I have to.

I do like "How Small Is Butte?". We have this really neat hierarchical master key system. Part of that is some padlocks that work with our master Schlage door keys. One of them went missing a few months back. How small is Butte? So small that we found the lock in a drawer in our missing tenant's house. That's how small.

I went with "A Hookah for Our Trouble". Well because somehow it sums up the whole event. Despite all the stuff in this guy's place one of the very few eBay-able items is a water bong.

NOTE A: Yes I am aware that a hookah is more like one of those four hose opium jobs one used to see in old cartoons. But if it matters to you then I'd like to float the notion that you spend too much time thinking about drug paraphernalia.

NOTE B: A special holla' to all you law enforcement types. In so far as I'm aware this bong is a legitimate tobacco consumption device and will be sold for that purpose only. In contrast the odd little glass pipe made from a light bulb and a sharpie will be disposed of. Sigh: If only I could find a way to harness the creative energies of drug users and focus it on something not lame.

NOTE C: I know what "two" means; I know that "too" is a synonym for also and can also be used to suggest degree. e.g.: "too much". I know that "to" is used to suggest "towards a destination" (e.g.:"to the store", "driven to distraction"), suggests extent (e.g.: "The road stretched from here to the mountains."), and is used in tandem with verbs (e.g.: "to have", "to make", "to smell", "to be"). My question is: Do I say "any more than I have to", because its short for "have to do"?

Tenant Gone Missing

As I mentioned before, when we bought our new places one had some guy's stuff in it. We picked those up on the one month ago today. The former owner said that he hadn't seen the guy for 6 weeks, and that he had gone in just recently to check for an emergency situation. At that time he cleaned the rotten food out of the fridge.

Flash to Friday when for the 8th time I showed this unit to a prospective tenant. All the stuff still in place. Kids clothing, ashtray on the bed, cell phone on the dresser, portable CD player, pack of Marlboro Lights. Plus it's been re-keyed for a good week or so now.

The unit is clearly (and legally) vacant. The law says we need to store this guy's stuff for 45 days. We can then sell it to recoup our loses.

Word on the street is that he, his live-in girlfriend and (I suppose) the kid that clearly lived with them skipped town in a hurry, and that even their friends don't really know where or why they left. The Police stations said they've gotten no reports and that he wasn't in jail.

Its a bizarre world.

Happy MLK Day

It's Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday. It's my understanding that the local police don't take Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday as a holiday. (but don't hold me to this.) Rather, they long ago negotiated St. Patrick's Day as their holiday. Irish-Catholics, go figure. Well Good for them. Silver Bow Properties will be doing the same. Our paid replacement holiday will be Friday March 17th 2006. Why? Well the crew wont belly-ache about working today, but likely wouldn't show up on St. Patty's Day at all. We might as well work with them. Happy Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday

New Stuff

We've bought some new stuff.

Colorado

At the tax sale we grabbed this fine 3 bedroom house with 1 bedroom mother-in law in the back. Once the stinky carpet is out, the former occupants get rid of their rust-heaps, and that siding comes off it might be a respectable place. The mother-in-law unit in the back will make for a super nifty ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant unit. All this for 11K in change.

Park

Broadway

A fine gentleman has decided to rid himself of these three beauties, Two duplexes and a 4-plex. For those keeping score at home that will amount to 6 one bedrooms units and 2 two bedrooms units for our inventory. And just for giggles I moved into one. There is some renovation to be done but Robert and crew are getting it hammered out quite quickly. One of the units has a guy's stuff in it. No guy, he apparently skipped town two months ago, leaving (among other things) his cigarettes and cell phone. Must have been in a mighty hurry.

Rock House

This is one of my most favorite acquisitions so far; The Rock House. I'll post more pictures once the locks have been rekeyed. As it stands its a 7 Bedroom 2 Bathroom monster with a facade made of stone quarried on the lot (or in the Travonia Mine at the end of the block). We'll refactor it and make it a really nice single family home for resale. Watch for updates at the Silver Bow Properties Blog in the spring.

Subscribe to MAX

You can now subscribe to the MikeAbleXray Blog using the link on the left.

What is "subscribing"? If you read multiple blogs, its a cool thing. It allows you to check all those blogs at once without having to go to each website. You'll need a feed aggregator like Feed Demon. Feed Demon is easy to use. Copy the URL pointed to by the subscribe button, then click Add new Channel and the rest will become clear.

But what if I only read your blog? Well soon the companion Silver Bow Properties Blog will have a feed. That's a blog you'll likely be interested in. Once you have Feed Demon you'll probably find a podcast or two you'll like.

614 N. Alaska

A Church for 2nd marriages?

And low, on the tenth day of the eleventh month this year of our lord two thousand and five, Silver Bow Properties, LLC. has purchased a pink church. Actually the historic placard suggests it was a boarding house for a dozen miners. It will make for a nifty three-plex. It is tucked in a small community between the Stewart and Original mineyards.

What not to do

Did some scurrying about to get some tile in a bathroom. Not my best work. Though, considering the drywall wasn't totally screwed down, we were doing this diamond shaped pattern and I've only sorta done this before, it came out alright.

I got mad tile layin' skills

Number 7

Something New.

We have received this double duplex from the county. It is a developers packet property. This was the 4th packet we applied for. It was the first one we got and the first one for which we were the only applicant.

We will turn her into 4 three bedrooms. Everything new and we will be offering internet to the tenants.

We have a duplex two doors down.

Criminals and Loans

Rocky crapped three times and pissed 4 times outside yesterday. Cleaned out the office some. Still no sign of my wallet. Did Robert's job yesterday morning, while he recovered from taking Christina and Keri to SLC. His job sucks.

I thought I might have some time to work on code yesterday but it didn't materialize until 4 or so. By then all I had left in me was a quick go at Roller Coaster Tycoon. Lazyness. I actually did use the time to clean for the most part. I started "The Art of War" audiobook. I will need to re-listen to portions of it. it's a complex text. Mortgager has gotten the Granite Street loan underwritten with 85% financing. I guess they are arguing over rate. Hoping for Monday and 4:00 but I'm feeling 50/50. I let our real estate agent know. They need to see 36,000 in an account and my rent checks for aug and sept. I handled the 36K but the checks are on order. This means that we should sign on Monday but the loan wont get funded until later when the checks arrive. Dumb. The real estate agent is afraid we cant get the extension so its either Monday or nothing on this Granite street place. There is a backup offer and the owner is getting nervous. Ate pie for brunch, wanted more this morning but it's all gone. May need to liberate more from the Washington fridge.

Had some burger thing with Joes (fried potato wedges) for lunch. It was kinda ganky looking and I didn't have time to eat it until it was cold. Wasn't as bad as it looked.

One of our best post-prerealse crewmen needs to squash his appeal or risk additional jail time. I saw him yesterday morning about 10am and then not again. He said he'd be at work by twelve but as late as 1 he still wasn't. I'm hoping he is ok. Keeley is worried this morning about Craig who has a nasty swollen welt than is moving around his face. I guess he has some swollen lymph nodes as well. He called the hospital and they said wait another day. This is a result of last weekends hike to some mosquito-infested lake.

Robert has lead poisoning. Perhaps from here but possibly from his prior machining job. He was working with "leadloy". Might explain a few things. I'm going to get tested. I was in the same high-risk room for a good long time. I hope I have it too. Then it means that I might get smarter as it gets out of my system.

Some of our loser tenants are more and more suspicious. We suspect they, like the guy next door are dealing meth. We aren't sure how to proceed. At this point I would almost prefer to roll the dice and just call the police.

BLDC Loan Committee

Who likes monkeys? I do I do!

Keeley returned today. She mostly worked on the BGE stuff. I offered her the over time. She was unenthused but didn't say no. She sighted continued illness. She says that Craig was not well. Some cellulitous or such thing. Mosquitoes.

Prior to the meeting I got a call stating that the 651 S Main place (old main) was unsuitable. I presented it as an option anyway. The board couldn't have been less interested in stock and were compelled by the notion that Old Main is a detriment. I was able to convince them to table the issue for a month until the main street place is completed. When done (hopefully the next two weeks) we will get an appraisal. That should satisfy the counsel.

I just found some food stuck to my arm.

I was asked to be at the counsel meeting tonight. The competing bid for the 6 lots on the 200 Park Street guys are trying an 11th hour switcheroo (The competitor for the mini-golf). Or aleast thats whet i've been told. I was asked to decide objectionable I find their new proposal. We would be in a weak position to protest as our idea was to convert it into a miniature golf course. I advised that they contact MERDI. They have an east side development plan. I'm sure they have an opinion on the development. Simply a matter of whether they wish to throw their weight around.

I want to go the movies. The last movie I saw: Batman Begins was quite good. I'm going to chance War of the Worlds.

Robert has left with Christina and Keri to take them to the airport in SLC. I took Billy Bob out and he rolled in animal carcass. Not as bad as before but he will still need to be bathed. He is whiny.

Monkeys! A day of Grr.

The Mortgage people handling the loan for the Granite Street purchase took their sweet time getting started. I failed to bust their asses sooner in the process and am paying for it now. They have two options: A full-doc that requires sale proof on 50 E. Valecitus (which I'd have to get from Paul) or a stated that relies on the legal existence of Silver Bow Software, LLC. Bizarre; the value of that which is truly nothing.

I need to give the presentation to the BLDC board tomorrow. I need to convince them to take the Imperial and some combination of stock and the 649 S. Main Street project as collateral. I need to get a real estate guide to pull some comps. I'll do some for the Imperial, though I do already have a comparative analysis from the Real Estate Agent. I'll mostly want it for the Main street property. I'll also want to show the general market appreciation if I can.

Several weeks ago I shot a shotgun off upstairs as a test of how far load goes in a house. It went through a lath/plaster wall and some pellets though the next. Robert shot his nine-millimeter. It went through two walls and then some shrapnel ricocheted off the floor. This more or less matched my original thoughts that a shotgun is the best for home defense and in our case should only be used when cleanly backstopped by a brick wall. Hollow points like in Robert's 9 pack with wall material and more or less gain momentum.

I shall go retrieve the guide I require after this episode of Voyager. "The Omega Directive."

I tried to find the SBS business license but found it missing. The lack of proper filing is driving me crazy. Though it is fair to remember its was further behind before Keeley was here. I do need to spell things out for her more thoroughly than I have been. Mind reading isn't in her job description.

Rocky 2ed out side twice and was 1 and 1 with 1s today. The 2nd 2 was like three tatertots. I think he squeezed them out solely for my benefit. I shall take him with me on my little trip to find a real estate guide. Then it's off to bed.

This morning I took a pee at the 1st alarm of 6:30. I was more awake then than the #3 7:45 alarm later on. I think I'll change up to waking at 6:30 regardless of how nice I might be to get that extra hour plus. This wont be the first time I've fail at making this correction.

Best Fireworks Ever. Ever Damnit!

An amusing set of girl-less BBQs has occupied yesterday and early today. girl-less only in sense that no prospects for Mrs. Detjens emerged. Amusing in the sense that it was my first 4th/3rd of July here in Butte. Perhaps the most beautiful display I've ever seen. A whole city celebrating without fear of the capricious and arbitrary stomp of CA government jackboots. Here is a short movie of the civilian fireworks. Robert took some excellent photographs. I spliced them into a time-elapse video of the fireworks display.

Pretty!

I bought so many fireworks I couldn't launch them all.

Billy-Bob growled and nipped at me this morning. I was able to calm him and get him to go where I went.

I'll be going to the BLDC loan committee meeting this week. Wish me luck.

It's been well with Robert and Christina. I needed to remember that I can only modulate my own actions; and that even when it seems the responsibility lies with others changes to improve myself can often have astonishing improvements in my relations with others.

Tomorrow will be a busy day.

So far today (beyond related activities and cleanup) I read some from Game Developer Magazine, watched an episode of Voyager (As I write) an episode of SG-1 (thanks to mom for the recording) and cleanup from yesterdays BBQ. I think that's why I'm such a hit with the ladies.

I am feeling a renewed sense of purpose. Not only for the soon-after activities of today and tomorrow but for the renewed pursuit of even more ridiculous aspirations such as starting a game development company.

It remains for me to layout my apartment upstairs and check on a payroll error. Ralph will be getting his payroll raise next week to 8$. His mother died while mom was here. I owe mom a call. My phone died yesterday. Sumit also called on Saturday. I was good to here is voice. It sounds like he might swing out here whilst on a trip to Idaho (Boise most likely). But I don't have the bastards phone number.

Fashizle

Had dinner at the Broadway Cafe last night with Robert Christina and Keri. Sat next to some local government folk we know. They where debating the realtive merits of some developers packet proposals (which includes the 659 S. Main and 631 W Silver Properties we bid on.) We were told it was unlikely we would get both (probably the Main St. one as we were the only bidder). But Robert seems convinced that the silver one will go to us as well. I think the only other bidder was a war vet with pronounced PTSD.

I'm going to start crate training Rocky today. I'll try to use the one that Robert bought for Billy-Bob but its will likely prove to small. So I'll be ordering one today. Rocky's severe separation anxiety causes him to tear a place up so it's really the only way. He gets trapped in the bathroom and other stuff. I don't want to come home with him crushed under something he knocked over. He did shit two out of three times in the parking lot at the old Pudgies pizza yesterday so that's good.

I figured out the payroll stuff more or less. I should probably have hired someone else to do it but I'd rather figure it out myself and then turn into a data entry spreadsheet activity for Keeley.

An employeed approached me on Ralph Clarke's behalf. He wants us to give him a raise. We have just bumped him to $7, though he clearly should be getting $8. Ralph has been excellent and would be worth every bit of $8. We pay the other two regulars $8. Steve is worth it but Dave has been slacking and largely worthless. I just want to get workers comp coverage before he freaks out and takes off his toe with w/ a nail gun.

Mom comes Thursday night, late. She's here until the morning of the 28th. Insists that she needs to see me on my birthday. I'll show her my little empire. Keeley starts work again the same day.

The BLDC has refused to accept 649-651 S. Main as part of a collateral package for a loan. they say's its un-marketable. I disagree (but my vote doesn't count). I'm going to try to get an appointment with the main shot-caller to discuss collateralization.

Well Lots to do.

No No No! Don't Be Jealous.

Oh Sweet Jesus What Have I Done?

Our newest building. Or rather the giant pile of debris that sits a story high in the basement. Part of the roof burned and fell into the basement. It took a section of all the floors below it.

I swear I haven't lost my mind. Not all of it. It's got to be around here some where... Next to my keys?

Fighting in the Street

Robert and I were yelling at each other on the street yesterday morning. Not as funny at the time but certainly histerical in retrospect. He was talking to Bob and I was standing right there but not paying attention. He assumed I was which led to a miscommunication. The miscommunication inconvenienced him so he was raging. I should have been paying attention; he should manage his anger better. The whole thing is pretty damn funny. We put on quite a show for the neighbors.

Our suckiest prerealase crewman showed up again. He isn't bad per say, but its impossible to communicate with him. One is never sure that he understands. We asked for a 6 dollar dude and encouraged the crew to bring someone else but guess who showed. May need to run a 5 person crew just to get a new guy. Ralph moonlights at the Red Lion. I'm not sure I like that but I'm not surprised either. The guy is a workaholic.

It sounds like we are going to go to comedy night with Keri. Today was the first day that Keeley was around the house in the morning. Schedule adjustments will need to be made.

Laura got the chocolates I sent her. I wish her the best in Africa.

Discombobulated Stuff

My plan to make a new version of MSMoney for the purposes of SBP is probably going to blow up in my face today. I think I might cop out and just harvest the data I need and leave the whole project for later. We shall see. In any case it's holding up the application for a four-plexs on Granite Street (As is my failure to call Morey for funds).

Carol returned to CA today. They had a good time at Glacier. I spliced together the shorts to make movies for a number of the properties we have been looking at. Set them to music. It was a fun little project. I'll make them available for y'all in the not to distant future.

News From the Front

The dogs have gone nuts. Christina's mom Carol, Christina, and Robert went to Glacier today. The dogs have been uncontrollable. This after noon perhaps I'll take them to the lake.

Today I have to program an application for SBP accounting. I have Keeley entering data into a database I designed. I need to produce a tool for her to do it with.

Bartender Girl had a reasonable excuse for missing date number 2 or 3 (I forget at this point). She has offered to take me to dinner tomorrow night. I am to pick her up at 6 from the bar. She was especially fetching last night.

Our buddy Bob and his mason buddy are here this morning. After this log I will check on their progress. They are repointing the mortar on the east wall in the west basement as well as finishing their repairs in the boiler room.

Ralph (who is our newest prerelease crewman) got a raise yesterday to $7/hr. He is turning out to be a fine employee. I'm debating supporting him as a candidate for foreman, when we need one. From what I hear we will be starting 44 E. early next week.

Mini-Golf 3: The Revenge

Keeley is working into things slowly. Her computer skills are a bit light but she seems to learn and retain well. I've spent most of my time working with her. A lot of problems with my processes have cropped up so that's eating time.

The proposal for the west park golf course site fell through. Actually a bit on purpose. We sent a letter of support for the alternate project to the land sales committee. The other project involves 1.5 Million to develop and office building. If they can get that project then that’s the way they should go. We were tentatively offered some unbuildable land over by the pit as a consolation prize. It may not be the way to go considering it's a superfund site (meaning no digging and thus no buildings).

Mini-Golf 2

Keeley's computer is only now up and running. The electrical in that area along with phone and the actual counter still needs work but I’m going to move her there when she gets back from lunch today.

Mini-golf course presentation went quite well. Afterwards we ended up at the M&M with Commissioners Sorich, Walker, Dunlap, Bury, and Sheehe (more or less a 1/3 of the council). We didn't talk about the course with the lot of them but did make some new friends and discussed our vision for Butte as well as our projects.

Sheehe had a good idea for the course. Put it under a headframe (he was thinking the Original). We are perusing that idea with some folks up at teh courthouse about a diffrent headframe. Looks great.

This is what a headframe looks like.

In the mean time check out the MiniPut2 game

Caught up with Bartender Girl. She is to call me tomorrow for a lunch date. We shall see.

Mini-Golf

A quick Butte Civics lesion. There are three towns in Silver Bow County: Butte-bustling city of 35,000, Walkerville-I'd call it Butte's Springtown, and Rocker-a truck stop and a ganky full-nude strip-bar. So since Butte is the only real city in the county in 1977 (A great vintage for babies) the city and county governments merged. The upshot of witch is that while a city has a city council and a mayor, Butte-Silver Bow has a Council of Commissioners and a Chief Executive.

Now a quick Butte Econ Lesson: B-SB is like Flint Michigan in that it was a one-industry town (mining) and then the industry left (prices of metals fell). And like Flint, a some of the Butte citizens choose to stay, and many other chose to leave. Two other employers came in, the Montana Power Company and Touch America (telecommunications not a crazy band of perverts). Well they both went under. Needless to say the economy has had some serious suckage. The upshot of which is BSB has a lot of property that was lost to back-taxes.

More Civics: They used to sell the property at a big tax sale. But bad people took advantage by buying historic buildings on-the-cheap and then gutting them for timbers and brick (largely to ship to the west coast or north east). They would then not pay the taxes leaving BSB with the same property but in far worse condition. The new strategy is to issue Developer's Packets. Which is like a tax auction except that your plans are the more the focus than your bid. Plus you must get reasonably along in your project before you get the deed. (though if they take it back they have to reimburse you for your improvements).

Why was all that important? I am making a presentation to the Council of Commissioners regarding a developer's packet tonight. Its for a small piece of vacant land two blocks east of us. We want to through in a bid just incase no one else does. But we cant just “buy” it so we propose to cram an 18 hole historic Butte and Mining themed miniature golf course.

Keeley Starts

It would appear Keeley is coming tomorrow. I have tons for her but not sure if I have the time to get her started. I'll go over the rental agreement with her and then have her tag along with our BSB property walk through and our inspection of the 505 S. Idaho.

Here is a video of Idaho when we did our walk through. A note of warning its a 43K download.

Bowden

How Sweet is this fine gem?

This is the Bowden. It's cool four-plex located between the hospital and the College. You might note some the "minor" repairs it will require. Oh and its an asbestos nightmare. We had an offer in but when the home inspection came back we backed out.

N. Washington

We picked up this fine 3 bedroom two-banger on N. Washington.

6% fixed for 30 years. A good deal but it was a giant hassle. National banks clearly aren’t the way to go for financing.

Look How Pretty!

It is green. I love green. But on a house? I dunno. It is quite a choice. You'll also note the "art" affixed to the front. The prior owner was an artist. Art attached to the outside? Again, it is quite a choice. Suffice it to say the neighbors are happy.

S. Idaho

We closed on this 4-plex on South Idaho. The units are shotgun one-bedrooms. That is to say that they don't have proper bedrooms at all.

It has some neat features. The bottom floor units have hardwood. There is a "turrent" half-round on the south side units. Some young coed is going to squeal with girly delight.

EEEEEE!

Home Sweet Shithole

We bought another property. The idea is to use the rental profits to subsidize construction on the Imperial. We a working on a few such properties.

This is a real crap bucket. The downstairs unit isn't so bad and both units are rented; but the top is kinda a slum and the people are less than stellar citizens.

Radio Free Montana

Robert and I were on the radio. One of the radio stations (three frequencies with different stuff) is trying to raise money to put American Flags on the top of the 12 head frames (left-over historic mining "derricks"). Robert and I donated enough for a flag in the name of Silver Bow Properties, LLC.. They had us come on the air with the DJ (Robin Jordan) and made a big old fuss. Very nice people.

A headframe.

Damn Crazy Irish

I've never been much of a fan of Saint Patricks Day; and yet now I find myself living in Drunken-Irish-Catholic-Miner Central. The celebration was more or less a frozen street party. The crowd was more or less cheery but that didn't stop them from fighting, throwing beers, hastling the police or smashing windows on shops. Robert has some pictures on the silverbowproperties.blogspot.com blog.

Juiced

The electrical got ran to my mezanine office. I wired the sockets and ran the conduit myself. So if I suddenly stop making entries it might be because I'm dead. Actualy I did some of the electrical for the bathroom and I've yet to kill anyone, so that bods well. Mr. Edwards handled the actual attachment to the curcuit breaker.
