Delay

Brian's Trip has been delayed until tomorrow morning. Turns out when its above 80 degrees (that's 26 2/3 C for you wacky foreigners) like it was last week the snow melts; and fast. Uprooted trees are getting flushed down the Gallatin River (one of the three that make up the Missouri). Brian wants to wait a day for the river to be below flood stage. Some nonsense about not wanting to die. I think he just cant stand to leave Butte.

Brian: Like Lewis and Clark, but smart enough to go with the current.

Brian's Adventures

My friend Brian has arrived. He biked from his place in South Dakota to about Bozeman into a stiff headwind. He finally gave out and took the bus. He is eager to get started on the next leg of his adventure. Kayaking the Missouri. Which is borderline nuts, but all the same I do have a slight twinge of jealousy. On Tuesday morning he casts of from Headwaters State Park just outside of Three Forks Montana.

Mommy. Where Does Spam Come From?

One of the places junk mail comes from is your friends, family and coworkers. You know the ones. The ones who forward you silly animations of dancing teddy-bears or some nifty mind trick that can predict that you came up with "donkey" and "the number 7". All those instances of your email address being tossed about on the internet sea, eventually will lead it in to the net of a spammer. Thanks. No. is a website that you could send to these people. It politely suggests that they should be more sensitive to flagrant usage of your email address. But like any constructive criticism I cant imagine anyone who is fooled by a missive claiming "everyone you know will die if you dont send this to 10 people this minute" will not take offence. Sigh. I dont even know what I'm talking about anymore. Oh, and by the by. I'm not talking about you. Oh and whats more; if Bill Gates wants to donate billions to save gay baby orphaned whales on crack, he will. He doesn't need you to forward an email.

My Guts are Icky

My innards are in rebellion. I think it might be something I ate. It was either the two apples or the Taco Johns. It's too soon to tell. I may not have sufficient empirical evidence to make a definitive judgment.

Wee! Lightning!

Tragically, I'm ill equipped to take pictures of it.

Butte: Ambassador to the World

How many presdants came to your town this week? I thought so. Mary McAleese, the president of Ireland, came for a visit. Apearantly its not uncommon for the president of Ireland to come. Then again I belive I have more fingers than they have past presidents. We went to hear her speak at the MAC.

I dont know much about her politics so as far as I know she is one of those raving euro-socialist types complete with mouth-foam. Regardless she has two good things going for her. 1.) Ireland is becoming a rags to riches story and is probably one of the most succesful members of the European Union; and McAleese has been around long enough to take some of the credit. 2.) She not only came to Butte but thanked the community for all the countless mining dollars that they have sent over the decades back to Ireland. So huzzah for McAleese!

In the photo above I have highlighted the back of McClease's head, Robert and Sabrina. They were so close they could have bit her, or shook her hand. Either way. Specail bonus points for those who noticed that the image overlay was the Irish Flag.

Thin Blue Line

Spring has sprung in Butte. Which means all the projects that got halted because of weather last year are in full swing. Businesses are painting; the city is tearing up the streets. I came around the corner this morning to discover a crew snapping a chalk line down the sidewalk. "Ga! They are tearing up my sidewalk. Why wasn't I informed?". Turns out its public art. The line speaks to our divisions visa-vi property delineation or whatever. A bit too high concept for my feeble mind. Nice people though.

Read more about the art in the Montana Standard.

Gas Holiday

Good news. There is a bill in the Senate to send us all a $100. It's a relief check for all the high prices were paying at the pumps. Whahoo. I was going to be homeless but now I've got enough money for 2.1 tanks of gas (gas is cheap here). Of course I'm sure the bureaucracy involved will cost $25 per check but hey. Oh, and SURPRISE! In the bill there is a portion of the bill that would allow drilling in AANWR, but I'm sure that's an oversight. Another potion of the bill will suspend federal gas taxes for 60 days. Which is cool. But why not say, Forever? If it's not so critical that we can go without for 60 days then, do we need it at all? Or how about a permanent 1/6 cut in the tax (60/365 is roughly 1/6)? Yeah! 3 cents/gallon (18 cents/gallon x 1/6)! What a budget breaker. Now I can afford a stamp every time I get gas! One might say that this is an attempt to bribe the US citizens into allowing drilling in national refuges. But I say look on the bright side. Perhaps this is a new trend. Perhaps from now on when the government tries to hose us at least they will send us $100 and a stamp first. Read more about this at http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/gascheck27.html Of course I'm way behind the ball on mentioning this but I don't have TV so sue me.
